DUO HELP TO SAVE ENVIRONMENT ONE CUP AT A TIME

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

A LOCAL pottery duo have taken the war of waste into their own hands – literally – by creating reusable ceramic coffee cups.

The handmade ceramic creations replace paper coffee cups, which are not recyclable despite popular belief.

Partners Brittany Frost and Kylah Rumble, 30, of The Ceramic Mill said they were inspired to create the cups after spotting them in a shop more than a year ago.

“We did some research one day and found 400 million get used a day,” Ms Frost said.

“It’s crazy, I just can’t imagine it. If we can stop it by buying just one (reusable) cup, we’re saving (the environment) one cup at a time.”

Ms Frost said the cups were being sold at Bam Bam Bakehouse and were flying off the shelves.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response, we’re worried we can’t keep up with demand,” she said.

“We sold five or six on one day. It’s not a bad problem to have.”

The 22-year-old said they both worked in hospitality and saw a niche in the market for unique, handmade ceramics.

“Ceramics are really in at the moment,” she said.

The cups are created on the pottery wheel, dried, fired, glazed and fired once more, which amounts to a five-day process.

Ms Frost said the cups were quite durable, could be used in the dishwasher and held the heat from coffee well.
