BORN IN THE US SUNDAE

- EMILY SELLECK

THE chill outside may be like Melbourne but the chilled treat inside one Gold Coast restaurant will make you think you’re in Manhattan.

The triple twinkie sundae, created by Brooklyn Depot at Surfers Paradise, is a creative take on the popular US treat.

Manager Jacob Low said it featured ice cream with three flavoured twinkies.

“They’re flying out the door because they’re really cheap ($12) and quite light and easy to eat,” he said.

“We wanted to create a funky dessert so we took this food that’s like an institution in the States and given them our own twist.”

Twinkies are a popular American snack cake and are often referenced in US pop culture.

“Everyone in the world knows what a twinkie is but you don’t really find them in Australia,” Mr Low said.

He said the restaurant was donating a percentage of funds to a charity called Unleashed Women for every Triple Twinkie Sundae sold.
