Singer savages former PM Abbott

-

TONY Abbott has received a stinging smackdown from Logan pop sensation Darren Hayes after the former prime minister confessed his fondness for the band.

It’s the second time in less than a week Mr Abbott has tangled with a prominent musician after his outspoken criticism of US rapper Macklemore playing his LGBTIQ anthem Same Love at the NRL grand final. And it’s an odd musical preference, given Mr Abbott’s opposition to same-sex marriage.

Hayes – a major pop star in the 1990s with his group Savage Garden – married his partner Richard Cullen in 2013.

“I’m no fan of Tony Abbott,” Hayes wrote on Twitter from Los Angeles.

Speaking exclusively to News Corp, Hayes pointed out a lyric from Savage Garden’s 2000 hit single Affirmation.

“I’m the guy who sang the lyrics, ‘I believe you can’t control or choose your sexuality’ at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games while wearing an Aboriginal flag T-shirt,” Hayes said. “I think that speaks for itself.”

Mr Abbott had praised the band in a radio interview.
