VILLAGE RACES TO FINISH LINE

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

THE Games village is now officially in the hands of GOLDOC, which is preparing for the “mammoth task” of finishing off the project.

The 18 apartment towers, comprising 1170 apartments and 82 townhouses, will be fitted out by GOLDOC.

Chairman Peter Beattie said: “To give you some indication of the mammoth task ahead, the main dining room will be fitted out to seat up to 2300 people at any one time, with over 20,000 meals served each day and more than 300,000kg of fresh produce used during the Games.”

The Games village emblem was also unveiled, with 23year-old Janet Turner’s colourful design the winning choice.

Mr Beattie also revealed he hadn’t heard from the banks in regards to sponsorship of the Games but remained “hopeful”.

“Gold Coast is a vibrant community, banks do very well out of here,” he said.

“I think it’s fair to say the banks should actually invest some money supporting the Games. And we do not have one cent from one bank. I think that’s pretty ordinary.”
