LEARNING ALL ABOUT FARM LIFE
Aquinas College students visited a thriving farm in the picturesque Scenic Rim where they met plenty of friendly pigs, lambs, goats and chickens

YEAR 9 food technology students from Aquinas College travelled to an authentic sixth-generation working farm in the picturesque Lost World region of the Scenic
Rim near Beaudesert.
The trip was linked to a unit of the study, from Farm to Feast.
The excursion, hosted by farm owners Kay and Dave, let students experience a day on a working farm that included the animals being raised for pork and veal, and their awardwinning cheese products.
“The day was like an outside classroom,” said student Dominic Breslin.
“We learnt lots and got to see all the animals.
“There were pigs, cows, lambs, goats and chickens.
Due to cost-cutting practices by large retailers, the farmers have had to expand their business in many directions to remain economically viable.
The farm now boasts an ecotourism business. Guests are able to stay at Tommerup’s rustic country accommodation including the original family home built in 1888.
In addition to the tourism aspect of the farm, school excursions are a regular part of the family’s day, with groups ranging from Year 1 pupils to senior students.
This farm is a southern Queensland gem, waiting to be discovered by Gold Coasters and others from beyond.
“It was a great experience,” said student Caleb Drew.
“We got to learn about the methods of farming cows and we got to see all the animals. It was a lot of fun.”
