BROCK HONOURED FOR HER STARRING ROLE WITH LIONS
THE chief executive who helped steer the Brisbane Lions women’s team to the AFLW grand final in the first season of the league has been named a Queensland finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s Awards.
Breeanna Brock was among the 25 finalists announced and has been nominated in the purpose and social enterprise category.
The businesswoman said she had been delighted to take up the mantle of CEO last year.
“It was a great honour, and I’m very thankful to the club to have put me in a position where I can make a difference,” she said.
“I’m very fortunate to have been a part of something that made history, you don’t get many opportunities like that.
“It’s been a huge thrill, a massive challenge and heaps of fun.”
The first season of the AFLW was deemed a great success, with strong crowds and excellent TV ratings.
Most recently Ms Brock has been channelling her efforts into urging the State Government to commit $15 million of funding towards a new state-of-the-art facility able to host 10,000 spectators in Springfield.
This would become the home ground for the women’s team.
This year, despite making the inaugural grand final of the AFLW against the Adelaide Crows and winning the right to host the highly anticipated event, the Brisbane Lions were forced to travel to the Gold Coast after the Gabba was deemed unsafe to play on after two Adele concerts.
The Lions ultimately lost to Adelaide after being undefeated all season.
Ms Brock said she hoped soon the women’s team would be able to have their own ground to call home.
“We really want somewhere we can build a strong base, and where our fans can come and watch us play,” Ms Brock said.
“So far both sides of government have been supportive, they have for a passion for supporting women in sport so we’re just getting through the process and we’re fairly confident the Government will be on-board.”
