A 14-length turnaround enough to have any trainer Boasting

- TOM BOSWELL

BOASTING yesterday came from 11 lengths back to win by three in a Beaudesert race that trainer Kelly Doughty described as “absolutely crazy”.

Doughty gave the filly, a $4.60 chance, no hope after they had travelled 100m in the race but jockey Michael Cahill rode Boasting to victory in the QTIS 3YO Fillies Maiden Plate (1200m).

“(The slow start) wasn’t the plan, especially at Beaudesert,” the Gold Coast trainer joked.

“She missed it by about four lengths and I’m thinking, ‘oh my God’.

“She was probably 11 lengths off and it was absolutely crazy.

“The moment she had gone 100m I thought we are absolutely gone, no hope.

“But at the home turn she had them beat. Beaudesert is a tricky track and normally you have to be up in the first half dozen to be a chance.

“She missed the start, came right around and won with respect.”

It was Boasting’s second start and came a fortnight after finishing third in a 1000m maiden at the Sunshine Coast.

“She was enormous up at the Sunshine Coast,” Doughty said. “She jumped well that day and raced midfield in a really nice race.”

Doughty labelled Boasting as the most promising young horse in her stable and said she would wait to see how the filly recovered.

“We will just place her when she is ready to go,” she said. “Whether we give her another start this prep or pop her out we will just look how she pulls up.

“Sometimes the ground at Beaudesert can be hard.”

The win was part of a raceto-race double for Cahill, who won the next event on Thunder Rocker ($1.90 favourite).
