Courage amid the mayhem

-

AN IRAQ war veteran is being hailed as a hero for saving the lives of dozens of people after stealing a pickup truck to drive the injured to hospital. Taylor Winston was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival when the crowds began to scatter as they were sprayed with bullets. The former marine (pictured) climbed over a fence to safety and after finding keys inside a white pickup proceeded to load wounded concertgoers into the truck and drove them 8km to the hospital. He and others set up a makeshift triage outside the concert so they could assess who most needed treatment. Winston, 29, said he probably transported “20 to 30 people” to the hospital that night. “Once we dropped them off, we were like well, let’s go back for round two and go get some more. I think a lot of my training in the military helped me in the situation. We needed to get them out of there regardless of our safety.” He has been lauded as a hero but Winston, who later returned the truck’s keys to the owner, said he was just doing the right thing. “There was a lot of bravery and courageous people out there,” he said.
