DISCOVER HEAVEN IN HELL’S HOLE

These falls in Northern NSW are a little piece of paradise

- WITH ANN WASON MOORE

LOOKING for a top secret walk in a private piece of paradise? Why not take a trip to Hell and back?

No, really.

Hell’s Hole Falls is an unsigned beauty that’s well worth the trek through Mt Jerusalem National Park in Northern NSW.

Cutting into a millionyears-old lava flow, the creek tumbles down forming a beautiful succession of swimming holes and waterfalls before plunging over a cliff into the Tweed Valley.

The walk is about 5km return through terrain that’s hilly but not too difficult. The trick is in finding the trail.

Journey in to Mt Jerusalem NP via the little town of Uki, taking Manns Rd. The last few kilometres are on gravel, meaning it’s almost time to turn onto Middle Ridge Rd for a further kilometre until you see a gated track to the right called Middle Ridge Trail. Park your car here. From the Middle Ridge gate, follow the trail down for 1km until you reach a fork in the road; take the track to your left for 700m until you reach an old bridge over the creek.

Turn right after the bridge and follow the path that runs along the creek. The rockpools are 200m downstream.

And after all that – plus the trek back up – maybe it’s easier to understand why such a sweet spot has been dubbed Hell’s Hole. Still, what a heavenly reward awaits in that pit of paradise.
