NOT DUNNY AND DUSTED JUST YET

- MADURA MCCORMACK

THE ICONIC Australian backyard dunny is at risk of being flushed out of history.

But in a bid to stop abandoned stool sheds from turning into permanent tool sheds, sewage specialists Queensland Urban Utilities are attempting to locate Australia’s remaining “thunderboxes”.

The water company is calling for Australians to dig up their best funny dunny stories, photos and memories for a purpose built “Pooseum” in Brisbane.

“A lot of people today wouldn’t remember that you once had to take a trip to the backyard to use the loo,” spokeswoman Michelle Cull said.

The dunny poo pail was collected weekly by dedicated night soil men who would take the pots to the depot, empty it into a hole and fill it with sawdust.

Former night soil man Lyle Barlow, 76, used to service 50 homes in the Mt Crosby area in Brisbane and still has nightmares about overflowing pans.

“Imagine in thunderstorms and cyclones and pouring rain, when you’ve got to go right down the yard to that dunny, and it’s a dark night too,” he said.
