CLASSIC TUTORIAL IN HOW TO NAB FLATTIES
THE Flathead Classic wrapped up Friday and congratulations to Brenden Whyte for taking the top spot.
The committee do a great job detailing how each flattie was caught and it is always interesting deciphering the results and using the information to enhance your chances of catching a flattie.
Firstly over three days there were and astonishing 5669 caught and released, not a record number but still an indication of why some consider Gold Coast to be the flathead capital of Australia.
From that total, 2938 were 40cm or above (legal size).
The most successful lure this year was a white one. In fact white lures were responsible for catching 1231.
Soft body lures just outfished hard body lures and 2758 were caught flicking soft plastics as opposed to trolling hard body lures.
Don’t bother with fly fishing; of the 5669 flathead caught only six fell to fly bait.
Traditionally flathead go a little quiet after the Classic but given they were released there are still plenty around.
