’I’M COMING FOR YOU’

COUNCILLOR TURNS PRIVATE EYE

ROBINA councillor Hermann Vorster has turned private eye, “staking out” a vacant block in his suburb and claiming it is a haven for youth gangs and drugs.

Cr Vorster has been logging time in his car to gather evidence of activities at a Queensland Rail-owned block of land on Maidenhair Place adjacent to the railway.

Cr Vorster said he was disgusted with the way the block of land had been treated.

“Gangs of youths have taken over the park and turned it into a drug den,” he said.

“It’s a hovel.”

Cr Vorster said his discovery had led him to “staking out” the area for about a week, watching goings-on at the vacant block from his car.

“I have seen tattooed youths get out of Ubers and go on to the block,” he said.

In a Facebook post, Cr Voster declared he was “coming for” those who had been making a mess of the area.

Cr Vorster said the area attracted the wrong element and led to fires in the area.

A burnt ottoman was found on the block as well a numerous plastic bottles, food containers and some syringes.

“I have seen what I think are ecstasy bags,” he said.

The mess has prompted Cr Vorster to write to Queensland Rail to have the site cleaned up.

He is also asking for the land to be gifted to the council to turn into a public park in order to keep the area clean. “It’s really a mess.” Cr Vorster said he usually cleaned up mess in public areas himself but as it was Queensland Rail-owned land he had asked the government department to take action.

Queensland Rail CEO Nick Easy said Queensland Rail had been unaware of the mess in the vacant block.

“This week, Gold Coast City Council’s Property Services area contacted Queensland Rail to arrange maintenance work on a block of land on Maidenhair Place in Robina,” he said.

“Prior to this, Queensland Rail has not received any complaints or concerns about this property through official feedback channels.

“Now brought to our attention, we have arranged for maintenance of the block in the next fortnight to occur.”

It is understood Queensland Rail have not received any letters or requests for the land to be gifted to the council for a public park.
