NAMES UP IN LIGHTS

- EMILY SELLECK

Coomera Anglican College students Jason Guy, Sian Callaghan and Cody Guy, all 17, can’t wait to see their films on screen at the school’s film festival.

The budding Spielbergs and Coppolas at Coomera Anglican College have finished putting in the long hours to carefully create their latest works, which they are about to screen at their annual film festival FILMS directed by students from Coomera Anglican College will hit the silver screen at the school’s annual film festival next week.

Held at Reading Cinemas Harbour Town, the evening will feature 25 works from students in Years 9 to 12.

Film festival co-ordinator Sarah Hands said the students had put in hours of work to produce their films, many at a professional standard.

“Students wrote their own stories, planned their preproduction, spent hours filming and hours editing in postproduction,” she said.

“There’s no greater experience in film than that of the ‘cinema experience’ and what better way to display that work to friends and family?”

Ms Hands said the program had come a long way since its inception.

“We were in a tiny room when we started four years ago and the film festival was just 15 or 20 people watching the movies in the library,” she said.

“Since then our classes have doubled in size and I’m proud to say that four out of 20 senior film students put film down as

their first university preference this year.

“Some of them want to be directors or actors and a couple want to get into Netflix.”

Student director Cody Guy created an animated short film – a skill not taught at school.

“I taught myself animation with the program I have at home,” he said.

“It’s a story about a robot which is trying to save himself from a virus.

“The robot is fully animated but it interacts with live action elements. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the films at the festival. Some of them are really professional.”

Members of the public are invited to attend Coomera Anglican College’s Film Festival at Reading Cinemas Harbour Town Shopping Centre. It will be held on Wednesday, October 18, from 6-9pm.
