Dove under fire
NEW YORK: Dove is facing heat for a body wash ad showing a black woman taking off her shirt to reveal a white woman, with many social media users calling it racist. Dove has removed the post from its Facebook page and posted comments on social media Saturday saying it “missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully.” Many who criticised the imagery said it suggests black skin is dirty and white skin is clean, and noted there is a historical legacy of racism in soap ads.
Nate peters out
BILOXI: Hurricane Nate brought a burst of flooding and power outages to the US Gulf Coast before weakening rapidly Sunday, sparing the region the kind of catastrophic damage left by a series of hurricanes that hit the southern US and Caribbean in recent weeks. Nate – the first hurricane to make landfall in Mississippi since Katrina in 2005 – quickly lost strength, with its winds diminishing to a tropical depression as it pushed northward into Alabama and toward Georgia with heavy rain. It was a Category 1 hurricane when it came ashore outside Biloxi early Sunday.
Breast cancer hope
LONDON: A genetic test that accurately predicts the risk of developing breast cancer could reduce the number of women choosing pre-emptive mastectomy surgery, according to a new study. British researchers hope their work will help women with a family history of breast cancer to make more informed decisions about their care. The blood test looks at 18 genetic variations. A study carried out by researchers at the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Manchester analysed the DNA of 451 women with a family history of breast cancer.

BANGALORE: Two white tiger cubs have mauled their keeper to death at a wildlife national park in southern India as he tried to usher them back into their enclosure. Anji, 40, was killed late Saturday at Bannerghatta Biological Park on the outskirts of Bangalore when the two cubs attacked him after a gate was not secure properly. Relatives protested outside the park on Sunday and demanded $A9835 compensation.
