Knights in split with top coach

- TOM BOSWELL

GOLD Coast Knights have sacked coach Alex Morrison just weeks after he led the soccer team to a second straight grand final.

Knights president Adrian Puljic confirmed the club’s decision to axe Morrison as they begin the search for a new coach for their Football Gold Coast premier league team.

“I can confirm Alex and the Knights have made the decision to part ways and we wish Alex all the best,” Puljic said.

“The Knights now need to regroup and look forward, that’s all I’m prepared to say.

“It was a decision we made and we move forward.”

The shock decision follows a fruitful two-year tenure by Morrison who took over from former coach Oscar Langone early in the 2016 season.

Morrison won the league one championship and grand final in his first season in charge and won the premier league in 2017 before the side was beaten 2-1 in the grand final to Broadbeach United on September 16 after conceding two goals in a minute in added time.

Morrison ended his time as coach with a successful record of 31 wins, eight draws and six losses.
