LONDON, Paris and New York are many times bigger than the Gold Coast so just because they have “night tsars”, there is absolutely no reason to introduce a night mayor here (GCB, 10/10).

The term “night tsar” is itself rather pathetic and so is any attempt to examine the possibility on the Gold Coast. If such a position is needed on the Coast, surely the responsibility could be given to an existing councillor.

Minister Kate Jones appears excited by the prospect but surely she already has enough to do.

Bringing a night mayor in before the Games would risk a much rushed result.

Worry first about transport concerns, Ms Jones, and guarantee ease of travel to the Games. KEN JOHNSTON, ROCHEDALE SOUTH

WHY does anyone need a military rifle to protect himself or his family? Unfortunately on September 17, 1787, America signed the Constitution which allows protection of their families.

That was 230 years ago, times have changed weapons have changed – it’s time the US changes. REG

JUST divide the GST according to population and make the welfare states – Tasmania, South Australia and Northern Territory stand on their own feet. The Feds are quick to get people off welfare but reluctant to take on the states.

Just takes willpower and conviction to do it. Oops, I think I just answered my own question. GT

WHY are homeowners being discriminated against by the Gold Coast City Council?

If you are an owner of a residence, you are subject to three levels of general rates depending on whether you reside in your property, rent it to a tenant for more than three months or use it for short term (less than three months) holiday rental.

There is a difference of about $1000 per year in the general rates.

The council’s services do not differ for any of the three, so where is the justification for the added impost on owners?

Besides which, we keep being told we are a major tourist destination, so why penalise owners who are trying to help? ZEKE KOTCHARIAN, GOLD COAST

ONE of the reasons I’m passionate about having trains on the Casino to Murwillumbah railway line is I used to work in a domestic violence housing service in Lismore where over half the tenants were Aboriginal women and children.

About 90 per cent of these women didn’t have a car or even a licence. If they weren’t local they took buses or walked, with small children and babies.

Politicians have forgotten the most disadvantaged groups in our region. We need trains to be fair to those who can’t drive.

I would love to live in a community where everyone had the same opportunities to a reasonable quality of life. BETH SHELLEY, BOOERIE CREEK
