Lappin to leave as Suns start changes

- TOM BOSWELL

MATTHEW Lappin has become the first assistant coach to be let go by Gold Coast AFL franchise with more changes likely to come.

Dean Solomon has retained his position as expected along with fellow assistant coach Ashley Prescott.

Andy Lovell and Matthew Primus will discover their fate this morning when they meet CEO Mark Evans and new coach Stuart Dew.

Inaugural football manager Marcus Ashcroft is also at long odds to retain his position.

Lappin, Solomon and Prescott met for talks with Dew and Evans yesterday.

Former St Kilda and Carlton player Lappin was told his contract would not be renewed.

It has been a long and anxious wait for the coaching group who have remained in the dark about their futures since former coach Rodney Eade was axed in August following a review of the club’s football department.

Evans opted against revealing the complete findings of the review until Dew arrived in order to give the incoming head coach the chance to decide who he would take forward on his staff.

Lappin and development coach Nick Malceski – contracted until the end of 2018 – were the only two mentors brought in during former coach Rodney Eade’s tenure while the rest have been at the club since its foundation.

Stephen Daniel has already left the club and taken up a position as the Southport Sharks coach.
