Port star’s ‘early end’ for career

-

RETIRING Port Adelaide forward Angus Monfries says he has no bitterness over the Essendon drug saga but knows that it forced an early end to his AFL career.

Monfries played 211 games for the Bombers and Power but missed the 2016 season after the ASADA decision to suspend 32 players involved in the Essendon supplements saga.

“I think the whole situation wasn’t an ideal one ... but I’ve got no bitterness,” Monfries said on SEN radio station.

“Things happen in footy and obviously as a footy club and as an individual, you would have done things a little bit differently. But I don’t look back with any bitterness, it was just the cards that were dealt at the time (I’m) more than happy to move on and forget about it.”

Monfries said the decision to retire was easy after he was unable to recapture the form at the Power that made him a star.

“I think the year off didn’t help me at my age and I just couldn’t find the form required,” he said.

The 30-year-old said he was proud of a career that yielded 248 goals.

“I’d say that I can look back and I can be proud,” he said.
