HORSES or people – that was the decision faced by Professor Mark von Itzstein as a young man. Thankfully a career as a world class equestrian was put aside when he chose a life of science. That paid early dividends in 1993 when he discovered the anti-flu drug Relenza and saved the lives of countless thousands. His relocation in 2000 to start the Institute of Glycomics at Griffith University was a coup not just for the university but also the Gold Coast.
