2 from 2 big effort for Small

-

EVERGREEN rider Cyril Small had a perfect record over the weekend with a two-track double.

The 58-year-old Gold Coast jockey won on McGill ($6.50) at the Sunshine Coast yesterday after steering Upstart ($18) to victory on his home track on Saturday.

Both horses are trained on the Gold Coast by Maryann Brosnan.

Small is best known for his association with multiple Group 1 winner Vo Rogue in the 1980s-90s.

These days he is employed as a trackwork rider for leading Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds and picks up rides where he can under his “have saddle, will travel” philosophy.

He prefers to describe himself as an “experienced young jockey”.

Small and Brosnan were happy to see the rain yesterday at the Sunshine Coast where the track was rated a heavy 10.

“Mary gets her horses nice and fit and we were praying for rain and she got that answered today,” Small said after McGill ran down topweight Shotacross The Bow ($2.40 fav) in the Class 4 Handicap (1800m).
