TEAM ALL OUT FOR 27

SURFERS’ STARS STUNNED:

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

CRICKET Gold Coast officials have been sent scrambling for the record books after Surfers Paradise were rolled for a barely believable total of 27.

Reigning premiers Queens romped to a 10-wicket win at breakneck speed as not even the appearance of former Queensland representatives Chris Swan and Nathan Reardon could prevent the romp.

Queens had the bye in Round 1 but didn’t show any signs of match rust on Saturday at Greg Chaplin Oval as the grand final rematch was done and dusted within hours.

Queens didn’t lose a wicket and took just 4.5 overs to run down the tiny target that their rivals took 14.4 overs to mount.

The total of 27 is the lowest score noted by a Surfers first grade team since MyCricket statistical records began.

Some of the lowest scores on record by any Gold Coast first grade team include Tamborine Mountain’s 18 runs against Broadbeach-Robina in 2010-11 while Burleigh made 21 against Queens in 2014-15.

“I still don’t know what to make of it, to be honest,” said Queens captain-coach Michael Durbridge of a result that he labelled as bizarre.

“Sam Winton (5-2) and Harry Winton (2-2) bowled the house down. They presented nothing to score off, hit good areas and it was a day where everything went our way.

“They never recovered to have that late-innings partnership that sometimes happen when the top order fails.”

Former Heat and Aussie T20 player Reardon topscored with 10 runs for Surfers Paradise in what was his first game for the club while captain Swan made just one.

Queens were so eager for match practice that most of the side remained post-game to play between themselves for many who didn’t get to bat.

“Half a dozen guys in our team didn’t do anything or have a chance to do anything so it was just to make sure they got something out of the game,” Durbridge said.
