FUTSAL

- EMILY SELLECK

FOUR local futsal players have Barcelona in their sights after making it on to the Australian team.

A group of King’s Christian College students – Archie Parkes, U10, Luca Gasser, Craig Russell, Rhyder Madden, Skye Parkes and Louis Williams, all U12 – played in the regional schools competitions where they were individually selected to play as part of a Queensland team.

From there, Skye, Archie, Louis and Craig were named in the top five players of their age group and will tour California and Barcelona.

Rhyder said he had been playing futsal for 10 years.

“I actually wasn’t good at it to begin with,” he said. “It took a lot of years until I was a good player.

“I started playing for the school team at King’s and then I was selected to play for Queensland.”

Rhyder said he was “really excited” to play on the Australian team.

“I train two times on Monday and Friday and also on Wednesday and Saturday,” he said. “I try to do my homework on days I don’t train.

“I want to keep playing futsal to a professional level – that’s the dream.”
