GOLD Coast motorsport fans will be treated to a blast from the past when Movie World stunt driver Warren Luff steers a Peter Brock inspired Commodore through the Surfers Paradise concrete canyon this weekend.
Walkinshaw Racing have reborn the livery that ninetime Bathurst winner Brock ran with the Holden Racing Team in 1994, trading their usual black and red paint job for a predominantly white colour scheme for Luff and main driver Scott Pye’s endurance swing.
Their No.2 has also temporarily been changed to 02 to mimic the famous No.05 associated with the late motorsport icon.
Luff said it had been “incredibly special” to adopt the historical livery, with which they guided their Holden to second place at Mount Panorama nine days ago.
“It has been so well received by all the fans,” he said.
“To take that livery back to the podium at Bathurst, it kind of was almost taking it to its rightful place.”
Following his career-best finish at the Mountain, Luff is striving to join Pye in springing another surprise on the Glitter Strip.
The 41-year-old driver starred in the early exchanges at the Bathurst 1000 where he defied his co-driver status to pass several regular stars in the wet conditions and admitted he would love for the heavens to open again this weekend.
“The weather is looking a little bit average so if it is raining I will be quite excited,” he said.
“I enjoy the wet weather driving. I think we’ve always had a competitive car in the wet as well.
“The Gold Coast circuit is incredibly unforgiving at the best of times so if you throw the weather equation in there as well, I think it will be quite spectacular.”
Luff, the only man to have won the Enduro Cup twice, had a simple explanation for why he is satisfied racing at only the three annual endurance events – Sandown, Bathurst and the Gold Coast – rather than hunting a yearlong drive.
“To me it is quality over quantity,” he said. “I would rather do three endurance races a year and be with a team like Walkinshaw Racing and know that you stand a chance of being on the podium than be (full-time) in a team where you are there just to make up the numbers.”
Pye and Luff are currently sixth on the 2017 Enduro Cup standings.
