PUNTERS are expected to plunge on defending Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen should rain continue through to the Gold Coast 600 race weekend.

Van Gisbergen and co-driver Matt Campbell have been installed by UBET as third favourites for the opening race on Saturday at $6.50. The Kiwi star enjoyed success on the street circuit last year when he placed first and second with then partner Alex Premat.

The latter is now lining up alongside DJR Team Penske young gun Scott McLaughlin, with the No.17 Ford pairing considered $3.75 equal favourites with the Red Bull No.88 entry of Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell. However, UBET spokesman Gerard Daffy is preparing for a significant shift in the market if the wet weather persists.

“Shane van Gisbergen has long been acknowledged as one of the best drivers in wet conditions, so if the rain comes, we can expect to see the $8 for him to disappear,” he said.

Showers are forecast for both Saturday and Sunday which could play right into the champ’s hands.

Ford gun Chaz Mostert and his driving partner Steve Owen are also at $6.50.
