FESTIVAL PROMISES BIG DAY OUT FOR ALL OF OUR HIGH-FLYERS

- KATE PARASKEVOS

FROM the moment Barry “Bazzer” Poulter discovered kites after attending his first kite festival in England in the 1990s he was hooked.

This passion for all “things that fly” spawned the Phoenix Kite Collective, a team of kite enthusiasts who will be showcasing their skills for the expected 4000 crowd at the Gold Coast Festival of Kites at Kirra Beach on Saturday.

Mr Poulter travels the world with his like-minded flying buddies, displaying kites worth $6000.

Cheerleader Carlie Davies, 12, is a fan of high-flying and looks forward to her first kite festival. “It’s going to be a great day and it seems like there is something for everybody,” she said.

Connecting Southern Gold Coast CEO, Peter Doggett, said the windy weather on the Coast should work in the festival’s favour.

“The event will go ahead regardless of light rain, but in the event of storms or unsafe conditions, we will work around it” he said. The kites will be flying on Saturday from 10am to 4pm with food vendors, market stalls, free kids activities, face painting and kites available to buy.

The annual Kirra Criterium cycling event will run in conjunction with the festival.
