Waters to go all out for Enduro trophy win

-

WHILE their rivals are busy looking after their title aspirations, Cameron Waters will be going for broke in search of the Enduro Cup trophy.

Waters and his teammate Richie Stanaway have brought the No.6 Prodrive Racing Australia Falcon to life with a pair of stunning drives at Sandown and Bathurst.

They each clinched their maiden Supercars win at the 500km event in eastern Melbourne last month and were firm contenders to back up that effort at Mount Panorama before being caught in a laterace tangle.

That setback dropped Waters and Stanaway into equal second in the Enduro Cup standings – tied with fellow Prodrive entry Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen.

The car ahead is that of Fabian Coulthard and Tony D’Alberto, whose bigger focus this weekend is to have two trouble-free races to protect Coulthard’s lead in the overall championship.

Waters declared the 66point Enduro Cup deficit to Coulthard/D’Alberto is very bridgeable heading into the third and final endurance event of the year.

“This track can throw up a lot of things and it’s pretty demanding,” he said.

“It can be a cruel place. You have got to be fast but you have got to be clean to get to the end and that’s our goal for this weekend.”

After a testing debut season, Waters has proven he can match it with the best in 2017.

He is currently ninth in the year-long championship, ahead of stalwart teammate Mark Winterbottom.

“Last year was a lot of learning and I learnt a lot in the offseason through bits and pieces that I did,” said the 23-yearold. “It’s nice to be up the pointy end now.”

Waters believes he can still finish the season as high as sixth in the standings.

That position is occupied by the man he replaced at Prodrive, David Reynolds, who is 125 points ahead.

The Enduro Cup trophy was yesterday delivered to Narrowneck Beach by a Surf Life Saving Queensland helicopter.
