Whincup taunts pacesetters
JAMIE Whincup has turned the heat up on DJR Team Penske rivals Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin, declaring the Supercars championship is theirs to lose.
Whincup, a six-time champion, will head into this weekend’s Gold Coast 600 sitting second in the championship standings, 91 points behind Coulthard.
Coulthard and McLaughlin have been the standout drivers in 2017, producing 10 race wins between them to occupy first and third in the championship.
While he has only won two races this year, Whincup has been a beacon of consistency for Red Bull Holden Racing Team to put himself within striking distance of a seventh title with three rounds to go.
“I certainly think it is (their championship to lose),” he said at a Vodafone store appearance yesterday.
“We’ve hung in there to get to a point where we are still in contention.”
FOX SPORTS will show every practice, qualifying session and race from the Vodafone Gold Coast 600 live and ad-free.
