PUNTERS SLIP ON MOSS AS BOLTER WINS

- TOM BOSWELL @TomBoswellGCB

TRAINER Harry Richardson says Moss Go Now may be bound for Doomben on Melbourne Cup day following a win at “ridiculous” $31 odds at the Gold Coast.

Moss Go Now stunned punters when he won the Class 5 Handicap (1800m) on a heavy track on Saturday by 2.3 lengths ahead of last-start winners Slydini ($1.95) and

Glen Ord ($5.50).

Richardson plans to enter the five-year-old gelding for a Benchmark 65 (2200m) at Doomben on November 7 or a Class 4 (1800m) on the Gold Coast four days later.

Punters shied away from Moss Go Now who had finished seventh of nine runners at his home track in Toowoomba at his previous start.

But Richardson was confident given the horse won and placed second at Toowoomba before that run.

“Those were ridiculous odds because you only have to look at his previous form,” Richardson said. “He has been racing very well and he wasn’t a roughie in my eyes.

“The owners would have done pretty well out of him. They had a very good day and that’s what racing’s all about.”

Moss Go Now has more than paid his way for Richardson since the trainer bought him for $7000 from Gerry Harvey late last year, amassing about $27,000 in prizemoney since.

Richardson had seen a glimpse of ability in Moss Go Now from his early career and it was enough for him to take the gamble and buy him.

He hit some early challenges but Richardson said he was starting to figure out how the horse ticks. “He is a very nice horse but he has taken a bit of working out and is starting to mature,” Richardson said.

“We don’t do much galloping with him. He does long, slow work and 90 per cent of his work is on the farm.

“We don’t take him to the track very often – we trot him.

“It has kept him happy, plus the long trotting has muscled him up.”
