FRIGHTFULLY GOOD COCKTAILS

- EMILY SELLECK

Bar’s tipple tricks are a real treat

FOR some, concocting crazy cocktails for Halloween would take a lot of creative juices, but for Guy Dann it comes almost as an accident.

The bar manager at Steampunk Surfers Paradise has crafted everything from a pavlova-inspired drink to a jaffle martini.

“If you just do the run-ofthe-mill cocktails you’re not going to get very far,” he said.

“Some of our most popular drinks are the Dancing Fairies and the Pavo Whip which resembles a pavlova.

“It’s also important to use flavours people are familiar with but come up with different combinations.”

Mr Dann’s latest innovations are three Halloween inspired cocktails, which, if nothing else, look spooky.

Owner Grant Rodgers said he expected the IT cocktail – inspired by the remake of Stephen King’s horror story – to be a bestseller.

“When you’re creating crazy cocktails it’s all about using products people are familiar with, but don’t think to mix together,” he said.

The other cocktails – the Gravedigger and the Black Widow – feature eyeballs, cobwebs and creepy crawlies.

“Every weekend we have people travel down from Brisbane or up from the northern end of New South Wales,” Mr Rodgers said.

“We noticed there weren’t a lot of cocktail bars doing anything crazy for Halloween, but it’s a holiday that the Gold Coast loves.”
