EAGLES SOAR TO TOP TITLE

- RYAN KEEN

THIS Gold Coast school Aussie rules team played a blinder in its first crack at the statewide champs – they won it.

The Elanora State School Year Six side, called the Elanora Eagles, took out the primary male title ahead of 500-plus other teams which enter.

The side won the local carnival in June to make it into a regional teams event in August which they also won.

That qualified them for the AFL Queensland Schools Cup finals last weekend on the Sunshine Coast where they beat St Thomas More Catholic Primary 44-1 in the grand final.

Nelson Beikoff Smart was named best on ground.

Coach and teacher Josh McLaren said it was a great achievement particularly as it was only the side’s second year together. “They are all good friends at school and it has aided them playing football. They get out there and work their guts out for each other.”
