Games to deliver spike for surf club

- JEREMY PIERCE

A HUMBLE Gold Coast surf club stands to make a motza from the Commonwealth Games, with the beach volleyball right on its doorstep.

Coolangatta Surf Club will be one of the biggest beneficiaries when the Games come to town next April, with the beach volleyball to be held just metres away at Queen Elizabeth Park.

The surf club has already had bookings for more than a dozen corporate sponsors’ functions throughout the week-long volleyball tournament, which looms as one of the Games’ most popular events.

The walk-in crowds before and after each competition session are also expected to generate some of the busiest trading days in the club’s history.

Surf club general manager Steve Edgar said it was an exciting time for the popular watering hole.

“It’s a worldwide event and it’s right on our doorstep – quite literally in our case,” he said. “We will be on the international map, which will be great for business. We’re stoked.

While many expected the beach volleyball to be held on the famous sands of Surfers Paradise, taking the competition south is expected to be a massive money spinner for the coast’s southern end.
