M1 and jobs the big issues

- RYAN KEEN

GOLD Coasters want a fix for M1 traffic woes, a broader job market and for an off-shore cruise terminal to be built as top priorities.

More than 90 per cent of respondents to a Gold Coast Bulletin survey on future-proofing the city felt the job market needed to expand past its reliance on tourism, the service industry and construction.

It’s a major plank of postGames legacy planning, anchored by the city’s burgeoning Health and Knowledge Precinct at Southport.

More than half – 58 per cent – wanted a much-debated second integrated resort and casino with 23 per cent voting on its location opting for The Spit, 20 per cent for Southport and 14 per cent in Surfers Paradise, which has emerged as the most likely venue if it occurs.

Traffic topped the list of “most concern” at 35 per cent, following by employment opportunities (24 per cent), crime/safety (17 per cent) and development (16 per cent).

“Fixing the M1” was the resounding transport priority for 61 per cent, followed by extending the light rail to the airport (27 per cent).

Improving access and parking at our major stadiums was a no brainer for 72 per cent who said it was needed.

Investing in new attractions was the best way of ensuring the tourism industry remained sustainable (48 per cent), followed by luring more conferences (30 per cent) and more marketing spend (13 per cent).
