Sprung by own helmet-cam Police allege 200km/h joyrider
POLICE are hunting a man who was allegedly sprung travelling 200km/h on the M1 by his own helmet-cam.
Scott Elite Nixon, 29, failed to turn up to the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to answer 30 charges relating to an alleged two-day bender of reckless driving on a bright red Honda CBR600RR motorbike.
Police allege the Reedy Creek man filmed himself riding more than 200km/h on the M1, weaving in and out of traffic and driving on the median strip.
He was charged with drug and driving offences after GoPro footage he filmed from his helmet literally fell into the hands of police after Nixon jumped a fence to avoid arrest, it is alleged.
Officers allege they first spotted Nixon flying out of the Southport Officeworks car park on May 6 before riding 110km/h down sleepy Rawlins St.
He was then recorded doing 172km/h in an 80km/h zone on Smith St, Southport, where police caught up with Nixon at a set of traffic lights and grabbed the keys from the bike’s ignition, police allege.
They claim he did a runner through suburban backyards where he lost his helmet.
Nixon was nabbed through video footage obtained from the helmet-cam, where he is seen reporting to Broadbeach police station while on bail, police allege.
The footage also allegedly showed Nixon travelling more than 200km/h on the M1 at Coomera, weaving in and out of traffic and driving on the median strip.
Police say he was unregistered uninsured at the time.
Officers yesterday attended the house of Nixon’s mother after he did not attend court.
She said she dropped her son in Southport more than two weeks ago for rehab treatment, the court heard.
Nixon has not reported to police, which is a condition of his bail, in recent weeks and a bench warrant was executed on October 26 when he failed unlicensed, and to turn up for court to face an unrelated charge.
Yesterday, Magistrate Don MacKenzie issued a second warrant for Nixon’s arrest. His bail was also revoked. Once he is apprehended, Nixon will face charges including five counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, driving while disqualified by a court order, possession of a weapon, possession of counterfeit money, contravening a requirement of police and offences involving registration certificates.
