Beersheba remembered

-

ONE hundred years after Australian Light Horsemen galloped headlong through heavy gunfire to topple Turkish defences at Beersheba, 100 riders will recreate the audacious World War I charge.

The October 31, 1917, victory from the risky cavalry charge allowed English commanders to break the line of defence between Gaza and Beersheba.

The bravery of the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments and others who fought in the campaign will be remembered today in what is now Israel.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are attending.
