Broadhurst fired up for shot at WBA title

- GRANTLEE KIEZA

LOGAN light-heavyweight Trent Broadhurst faces the toughest night of his life in Monte Carlo this weekend but says he has the skills to hit the jackpot against Russian world champ Dmitry Bivol.

The fast-punching St Petersburg powerhouse is a $1.04 favourite to keep his WBA crown at the Monte Carlo Casino on Saturday but Broadhurst sees weaknesses in the titleholder’s armour.

“No one’s invincible,” the 29-year-old scaffolder said. “He’s a good fighter, very busy and aggressive, but I’ve trained hard for this and I’m ready.”

The fight will be televised on HBO in the US.

Bivol (11-0, 9 KOs) is already looking past Broadhurst for a fight with top-ranked contender Sullivan Barrera next year.

Like Kostya Tszyu, the 26year-old champ has Korean heritage and exquisite timing with his punches. He was a two-time world junior champion as an amateur and scored 268 wins in 283 amateur fights.

Bivol is coming into the fight on the back of a big win over American Cedric Agnew.

On the undercard to that fight, Broadhurst scored his last victory, beating veteran Nader Hamdan.

JEFF Horn is ramping up his training for his first world welterweight title defence against Gary Corcoran in Brisbane on December 13.

With trainer Glenn Rushton overseeing his preparation, Horn began strength and conditioning work in earnest yesterday with Dundee Kim in West End.
