No Suns deal for Swallow

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

ANDREW Swallow’s ambition to join brother David at the Gold Coast looks unlikely to happen as new Suns coach Stuart Dew puts all his focus on the upcoming draft.

The former Kangaroos captain is contracted to the Kangaroos for another year but voiced his desire to move to the Suns during the recent trade period, saying he would “love” to play alongside David.

It was the second year in a row Swallow requested the trade to the Gold Coast.

The Suns were always open to discussing a deal but it didn’t eventuate as they worked until the final hour to get Gary Ablett to Geelong and Lachie Weller from Fremantle.

The Suns could have been in a position to pick up veteran Swallow during the current delisted player free agency period if the Kangaroos decided to release him.

But the Bulletin understands that the move is no longer on the cards.

Dew said the club wouldn’t be active during the delisted player free agency period with the new Suns senior coach instead using the week to build relationships with his coaching team while preparing for the national draft at the end of this month.

“We are probably looking to the draft at this point,” Dew admitted.

“I’ve spent the last week and

a bit really working with the coaches and giving them real clarity on their roles and expectations.

“I really enjoyed the last couple of weeks and I think we are well placed for when the players get back to hit the ground running.”

Gold Coast have an abundance of space for new talent heading into a draft where they hold picks 19, 41, 50, 54, 76 and 94.

The Suns brought in Weller, Harrison Wigg and Aaron Young during the trade period but Ablett, Adam Saad and Brandon Matera were all traded to other clubs.

Daniel Currie, Jarrad Grant, Mitch Hallahan, Trent McKenzie, Matt Shaw, Mackenzie Willis, Keegan Brooksby, Ryan Davis and Cameron Loersch were all delisted.
