Building up to danger
BODY-BUILDING supplements linked to deaths, organ failure and cancer are being promoted by social media personalities with no expertise or qualifications.
And after the nation’s medicines watchdog moved to ban potentially dangerous supplements last month some chains were urging people to buy up big before the bans start.
The Australian Sports AntiDoping Authority has issued a warning about supplements.
And Central Queensland University lecturer and former body builder Dr Betul Sekendiz has warned people are risking their lives if they rely on social media for advice.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration banned supplements containing the stimulants DMBA and DHMA in October because they were similar in structure to DMAA (banned in 2012).
