SUN BURNS AS MUCH AS UGLY QUIPS

- EMILY SELLECK

SUMMER is on the way, and Gold Coasters are reminded to slip, slop, slap – but spare a thought for this “ugly” breed of cat that also needs to cover up.

Clare Spencer’s five-yearold sphinx Austin gets sunburnt as easily as the rest of us – he even gets tan lines.

“He’s a hairless cat meaning he’s basically naked so he loves the sun,” she said.

“I used to take him outside all the time but he ends up sunburnt quite easily. He gets sick, then he peels and sometimes even gets tan lines.”

Ms Spencer said her hairless pal had to wear light Tshirts during summer to protect his skin.

“He has lots of jumpers for the winter but I also have a couple of light shirts he can wear when it’s hot,” she said.

“Whenever I take him outside strangers will ask me ‘what is that?’ and sometimes even say that he’s ugly.

“It’s horrible because he’s so lovely and just wants to cuddle, everyone who meets him says he’s just like a puppy.”

Despite people openly telling Ms Spencer her cat was unattractive, sphinx cats are actually in high demand in Australia.
