CHAMPION IDEA FOR A FUN RUN

- DWAYNE GRANT

EVER wondered what it would be like to stride out amid the atmosphere of a Commonwealth Games marathon? Wonder no more.

In a world first, up to 6600 average Joes will have the chance to participate in a fun run on the same roads at the same time as marathon runners are racing at next year’s Commonwealth Games.

To be held after the wheelchair marathon on Sunday, April 15, the lucky few will tackle a 5km course through the streets of Southport and Labrador before enjoying a grandstand finish at the Broadwater Parklands.

“Never before in Commonwealth Games history has an event of this kind been held,” Games CEO Mark Peters told the Bulletin prior to today’s launch of the ‘Gold Run 2018’.

The event will have a one-hour cut-off to ensure there is no impact on the GC2018 marathon races.

GC2018 ambassador and wheelchair marathon legend Kurt Fearnley said the fun run was a fantastic way to involve the community in the Games.

“It’s exciting GOLDOC has been able to bring this great community initiative to life,” he said.

The event, which costs $66 to enter, is open to runners and wheelchair participants aged 12 and older.

Entries open on Friday from 9am at gc2018.com/ goldrun.
