Melham’s home truth

“I THOUGHT we were home”.

That was the thought going through Ben Melham’s head when Johannes Vermeer absolutely cruised to the front at the 300m mark of yesterday’s Melbourne Cup.

He put a length on his rivals in a matter of a few strides and Melham dared to dream.

“When I pressed the button I thought we were home to be honest but probably the weight difference (got us),” Melham said after Johannes Vermeer was run down by Rekindling in the last 50m.

“He quickened like the winner and I was surprised to see one come over the top of him late.”
