‘Angry’ Uber driver jailed

Man mowed down cabbie rival in ‘callous’ attack

- GREG STOLZ

A GOLD Coast Uber driver who deliberately mowed down a cabbie rival in Surfers Paradise has been told by a judge he’s an angry man and sent to jail.

Sukhwinder Singh Gill swerved across the road to hit Jagmeet Sidhu as he was standing next to his taxi, sending him flying over the bonnet.

Mr Sidhu suffered a broken leg and spent two weeks in hospital after the incident on May 13 last year, Southport District Court heard yesterday.

Gill, 36, a former cabbie turned Uber driver who came to Australia from India in 2008, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm before leaving the scene of an accident.

Dramatic footage of the incident in Laycock St, captured by a kebab shop CCTV camera, was played to the court.

The court heard the two men, who knew each other, became involved in a “heated discussion” over the phone and arranged to meet in Surfers.

Mr Sidhu was standing next to his cab when Gill swerved at him across the road from 20m away causing the cabbie to “lift into the air ... before landing on the road”, the court was told.

Defence barrister James Feely said his client told police he had not intended to strike Mr Sidhu. But Judge Katherine McGinness said Gill’s actions were “at the very least intended to scare (Mr Sidhu) ... if not actually hit him”.

She said Gill had deliberately driven towards Mr Sidhu in actions she described as “callous and showing total for his safety”.

“Your driving had the potential to cause more serious injury and perhaps even fatal injury,” the judge told Gill.

Noting that he was in custody for domestic violence and assault offences committed since the incident, Judge McGinness said Gill “looks like he’s got a problem with anger”. disregard

She sentenced him to three years’ jail, suspended after 12 months, and disqualified him from driving for two years.
