Redzel not following that path to Millions

- NATHAN EXELBY

TRAINER Peter Snowden has poured cold water on the suggestion star sprinter Redzel could make a shock appearance on Magic Millions day in January, preferring to line up an autumn campaign.

Chris Ward, from the Triple Crown syndication which races Redzel, had flagged the possibility of a Queensland summer mission given the dual Group 1 winner “thrives being in work” but Snowden suggested it was unlikely.

“He is a Magic Millions horse but I think it’s just too hot to take him up there, so we’re more likely to kick off mid-February, early March,” Snowden told Melbourne’s RSN radio network yesterday.

He also seemingly ruled out a tilt at Royal Ascot in Britain, saying it made more financial sense to chase the bigger dollars available in Australia.

Even without Redzel, the Triple Crown colours will be solidly represented at the Queensland summer carnival, with the likes of Dothraki, Denpurr, Secret Trail and Smartedge earmarked for trips north.

Ward told Radio TAB’s Past The Post that Redzel’s elevation from a Flemington Listed winner last November to Australia’s premier sprinter was somewhat surreal.

“I couldn’t have imagined he got to the point he has now,” he said of Redzel who has won The Everest and Darley Classic at his past two runs.

“You never know what level they are going to get to.

“This bloke has been on an upward spiral ever since (his 2016 Flemington win).

“Who knows if he’s reached his peak yet or not?”

Ward and his brother Michael will soon sift through the Magic Millions January yearling sales catalogue searching for the next Redzel, admittedly with a little more fire power than they had when giving $120,000 for Redzel at the Gold Coast in 2014.

“We certainly have a lot of interest from people wanting to join Triple Crown in the new year,” Ward said.

“We will start (the selection process) very shortly. It’s a lengthy process but it’s crucial to getting the right horses.”
