SWALLOW’S SUNS COACHING GIG EASY TO DIGEST
BROTHERS Andrew and David Swallow’s dream to link at the Gold Coast Suns may still come to fruition.
It is understood Andrew is in talks to take up a coaching position on the Gold Coast, either with the Suns or AFL Queensland.
Swallow announced his retirement from the AFL on Thursday after failing in his bid to get his desired move from North Melbourne to the Suns that would have enabled him to finish his playing career alongside David.
The 30-year-old said he would love to join David at the Suns during last month’s trade period in what was the second straight year he had requested the move.
Swallow’s manager, Colin Young, said the experienced midfielder – who played 224 games for the Kangaroos over 12 years – had been offered multiple coaching positions and was weighing up his future.
“He will sit back now and relax and work out what he wants to do,” Young said.
Swallow’s motivation for joining the Suns as a player also centred around his desire to add another family unit around David, 24, and his partner Georgie Homer, who are expecting their first child.
Swallow may not have been granted his wish to play alongside David but a coaching spot at the Gold Coast would be the next closest thing for the pair.
There is a spot open in the Suns coaching department after the exit of former head of development Matthew Lappin and NEAFL coach Stephen Daniel, both linking with the Southport Sharks.
Swallow must first come to an agreement with North Melbourne regarding his contract before he can finalise his next move.
The former Kangaroos captain and three-time best and fairest winner retired with a year still to run on his contract and both parties must decide how much of his 2018 wages will be paid out as North Melbourne look to refresh its list.
