Patient spinner is tightening things up
TOP Gold Coast colt Matt Kuhnemann feels he is just starting to reach the stage where every delivery has to be a wicket ball.
Kuhnemann, now 21 and a member of the Queensland Bulls squad, continued his improved form with three wickets playing for the Dolphins in a Brisbane Premier Grade match against Redlands over the weekend.
His 3-60 off 27 overs was a fine afternoon’s work at Peter Burge Oval but not good enough to get the Dolphins the points as they went down 277 to 8-278.
Yet Kuhnemann is more than happy with his progress as he works on his economy to do justice to his left-hand spin.
“I’ve been consciously working on my economy and I’ve definitely tightened up my economy,” Kuhnemann said.
“I’ve been developing a bit of patience and one thing I’m concentrating on is closing out my overs, not to throw in a bad one or two at the end.”
So far this Premier Grade season Kuhnemann has taken 17 wickets in eight matches at an average of a tick over 24.
Against Redlands Kuhnemann sparked a mini-collapse just when the Tigers were in total control.
Sitting on 3-199, Redlands lost 5-14 before lower-order pair Michael Herdman and Jon Stimpson cleared the danger zone.
Kuhnemann’s victims were handy trio Stuart Edgar, Marnus Labuschagne (79), and Nick Hurford.
“Hopefully I can start getting some four or five-fors,” said Kuhnemann, who played for an Australian A side in a one-day match this year.
