GOING FOR GOLD — POLICE

-

THE Gold Coast has led the state in its recovery from the global financial crisis.

Construction, property and tourism are all hot. But to keep boiling, the city needs help from its political leaders.

As part of its Going for Gold election campaign, the Bulletin has asked both Labor and the LNP for commitments to make our homes safer, power bills lower and fix traffic congestion on the M1.

With crime on the rise, today the newspaper reinforces its push for better police and corrective services resources.

Commitment: Guarantees from all parties for up to 50 more police to combat rising crime.

• Coast MPs, the Police Union and cops on the beat agree that 50 extra police is the solution. Just before the poll was announced, Labor told the Bulletin it would recruit 44 more cops for the region.

• Coomera police station should again have district status – providing it with autonomy and senior officers.

• Corrective Services needs more resourcing to arrest the growing trend of criminals being allowed to stay on our streets because our jails are overcrowded and there is no room for them in custody.

• Money must also be dedicated to the Crime and Corruption Commission and bikie-fighting units to keep the foot on the throats of gangs.
