GOLDEN GODS OF SURFERS

Meter men take to Surfers streets

THE Glitter Strip gained some extra sparkle yesterday. Meter Males finally donned their golden trunks and hit the streets, delighting tourists and locals alike.

EAT your heart out Warwick Capper – the Gold Coast has its first Meter Males since the AFL larrikin’s 2007 cameo.

And like Capper, Finnish body sculptors Beny Ahlblad and Aram Dag are donning tiny golden shorts for their role strutting the streets of Surfers Paradise.

The pair did their first shift yesterday, two weeks after the Bulletin revealed Meter Maids owner Roberta Aitchison was toying with the idea of evening up the gender balance.

Mr Ahlblad, who won the Junior Men’s best physique title at a Finnish championship earlier this year, said he applied for the role after one of the Meter Maids told him about the opportunity.

“It’s all about personality,” he said. “I like to hang out with people and I like to have fun with people. Plus I love the sun and I get to walk around in speedos all day.”

Ms Aitchison said the pair were part of a Meter Males trial in the lead-up to Schoolies celebrations later this month.

“They have come over from Finland where they do body sculpting so they are nice looking, have good bodies and are happy to get out there,” she said.

Ms Atchinson said the Meter Males concept had generated an avalanche of positive feedback since she first floated the idea in the Bulletin earlier this month.

“People are loving it – I’m getting all these emails from women saying ‘About time’,” she said. “I’ll do it as long as it seems to work. If I find it’s not working as well as having two girls I will knock it on the head.

“But I think it will be quite good – and these two guys are really into it plus they are really nice and not over the top.”

Ms Aitchison said she was being inundated with Meter Male applicants from buff Gold Coast men since the story first broke.

“I’m getting all these big burly guys and I’m finding it really difficult to interview them – because I’m not sure what to look at.”
