THORPE HINTS HE’S READY TO DIVE IN TO MARRIAGE

- KYLAR LOUSSIKIAN

KYLIE Minogue has joined a cavalcade of celebrities celebrating the overwhelming backing of gay marriage in Australia, with Olympic hero Ian Thorpe even hinting he could be in line to tie the knot next year.

The 34-year old swimming champ and his partner Ryan Channing celebrated the result, but said there was “unfinished business” until the government legislated the change.

“Out of respect for marriage and what it means to so many people, I wouldn’t want to comment just yet (on the couple’s marriage plans),” Mr Thorpe said. “After Christmas, as long as it goes through, you can ask me again.”

As international stars including Ellen DeGeneres – who is married to Aussie Portia De Rossi – and Miley Cyrus posted congratulatory messages on social media, some locals spoke about the relief of the result.

Comedian Magda Szubanski, a long-time gay marriage advocate, yesterday said the announcement that 61.6 per cent of those surveyed had backed gay marriage gave her “the most incredible relief and joy and feeling of love”.

“It was kind of one of those epic moments when you are having every single feeling all at once. But also enormous pride in this country,” she told Today.

Recent Today departee Lisa Wilkinson was overjoyed at the result as was her former colleague Karl Stefanovic, whose girlfriend Jasmine Yarbrough posted an image of the couple yelling with excitement as the result was read out.

The most prominent celebrity backer of the no campaign, rugby great Israel Folau, did not make any comment after the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced the result.

Celebrity Biggest Loser and plus-size model Fiona Falkiner was among thousands who descended on Prince Alfred Park in Sydney yesterday to see the announcement.

Ms Falkiner, who has recently come out as gay, joined partner Lara Creber in a celebration of the result, and also hinted there might be a wedding on the cards.

Ms Creber, who met Ms Falkiner on a trip to South America, joked about an imminent proposal.

“Drop to one knee babe,” she said.
