Businesses and residents in northern suburbs Ormeau and Yatala are mostly like to benefit, with the Yatala industrial zone on an adjoining site set to be the biggest winner.

Who is behind it?

Longtime developer Suman Makan’s company has proposed the project. He is believed to have significant land holdings in the city’s north. In the mid-2000s he proposed revamping a shopping centre on Peachey Rd to create an Ormeau Town Centre.

Are other batteries planned?

Two $25 million, 20 megawatt batteries are planned for Victoria. Neither has been built yet. Elon Musk’s Tesla plans a 100 megawatt battery for South Australia.
