THEFT BIG PROBLEM

CRIME

-

EVERY day Brendan Westaway and his staff have to deal with products going missing from his Parkwood store, Pet Destination.

The frustration of shoplifters and dealing with mental health patients or methadone clinic visitors from the nearby Gold Coast University Hospital is why the small business owner wants something done about crime in the area.

“There should be a Police Beat at the hospital,” he said.

He said more of a police presence might deter theft.

“Shoplifters are pretty out of control,” he said.

“We lose an incredible amount through the shop – at least something every day.”

Pet Destination employee Chelsea Orley, 23, said working opposite the hospital also brought awareness to the mental health and homelessness issues in the area.

“You see a lot of homeless people, families too,” she said. “There needs to be more services available to help.”
