LET’S SAVE RIDE

- Ben English accepts responsibility for election comment

THESE are dangerous days for the carousel in Broadbeach Mall.

The merry-go-round has survived past attempts to have it removed, but a public campaign driven by the pleasure it provided for families and a sentimental attachment to a bygone era has saved this wonderful link to a simpler past – so far.

The Gold Coast is indebted to the council for pouring in the maintenance dollars each year and to Rotarians for their part in keeping the wheel turning. But wear and tear could throw a spanner in the works.

After a maintenance inspection, the council wants the ride dismantled and every component checked. It is difficult to see how such a benign ride could pose any safety threat, but after the Dreamworld tragedy it is understandable the council wants to be sure.

The worry is that this piece of machinery, said to be over 120 years old, might be deemed to be beyond salvaging. That would be very sad but this should not be an excuse to get rid of the ride just to save dollars. The carousel is an institution, loved by all. Every attempt must be made to save it but if not, then replace it with another.
